A new era in the Highlands: Introducing The Caledonian Thistle Hotel

There’s something special about Callander. Maybe it’s the way the River Teith threads through the town, or how the rooftops sit beneath the shadow of Ben Ledi. It’s a place people fall for - and for years, we’ve loved bringing customers here on Highland breaks. So....we've got some news...

When the chance came to breathe new life into one of its most iconic hotels, we knew it was something we had to do.

Formerly known as The Dreadnought Hotel, this grand 18th-century building has been part of Callander’s story for over 200 years. Now, it’s set to begin a bold new chapter as The Caledonian Thistle Hotel – and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome guests through its doors this summer.

Why this hotel? Why now?

At Caledonian Travel, we’ve spent the past few years steadily building something special – not just great value breaks, but a collection of hotels that feel like a natural home for our customers. Comfortable, welcoming, full of character. Places that know how to put on a good evening’s entertainment and serve up a proper breakfast.

This latest addition isn’t just another hotel. It’s a carefully chosen part of our vision – a standout property in one of Scotland’s most scenic towns, and one that gives our customers even more choice when it comes to exploring the Highlands.

It becomes the latest hotel in our collection, sitting proudly alongside our much-loved properties in Blackpool, Torquay, Scarborough and Arrochar.

We're not just opening the doors – we're raising the bar

We’ve not taken this on to give it a lick of paint and a new name. A full refurbishment is already underway – one that reflects the history of the building while adding everything our guests expect from a modern stay.

Bedrooms are being upgraded. Communal spaces refreshed. Entertainment areas improved. By the time we reopen this summer, the Caledonian Thistle Hotel will feel brand new – but still unmistakably Highland in spirit.

And it won’t just be us making it happen. We’re working with local trades, recruiting from the local community and playing our part in the future of the town we now proudly call home.

The kind of break that feels just right

It’s hard to put a finger on what makes Callander such a great base for a holiday – but once you’ve been, you’ll understand. It’s the perfect blend of scenery and comfort. You can wake up in a cosy hotel room, take a stroll past waterfalls in the morning, explore the Trossachs in the afternoon, and be back in time for dinner and a bit of live music.

Our breaks are designed around that rhythm. You’ll have time to explore independently, but we also offer brilliant included excursions. Think lochside views, scenic drives through Glen Ogle or Loch Awe, time to browse the shops in Oban, or visit the famous Scone Palace near Perth.

And with coach travel, all meals, nightly entertainment and even a few drinks thrown in on selected breaks, it’s the kind of break that feels both easy and exciting.

What a stay here really feels like...

There’s something reassuring about staying somewhere that’s run by people who know what makes a good holiday. You arrive and the room’s ready. The kettle works. There’s a bit of a view. You can wander down to the bar and recognise a friendly face from the coach.

Later, there’s evening entertainment – maybe a singer, maybe a bit of bingo. Everyone’s in good spirits. It’s the kind of evening that turns strangers into table mates.

And when you head back to your room, full and content, you sleep well. Because you know that tomorrow, you’re off to explore another part of the Highlands – and everything’s taken care of.

So, what happens next?

We open in July. You can already book your break through Caledonian Travel, and there’s plenty of choice. Whether it’s a five-day Highland adventure or a festive Turkey & Tinsel break later in the year, there’s something to suit every pace and budget.

And as ever, we’re keeping the experience at the heart of it all – great food, great value, and the kind of warm hospitality that brings people back year after year.

So if you’ve ever thought about visiting the Highlands – or revisiting – this summer is a great time to do it. You’ll be among the first to stay in The Caledonian Thistle Hotel, and part of the next chapter of a story we’re incredibly proud to be telling.
